KIERAN Delaney is 23 and lives in Heworth. He works as a photographer and decorator and is a passionate member of the Press Camera Club. Here in our new post Behind The Lens, he tells us more about his passion and shares his favorite photos – mostly from York!

I studied photography at All Saints for two years, from 2015 to 2017. Before that, I had always had a passion for photography, taking pictures with my phone until I was finally entitled to a dslr camera suitable for my birthday. I started photographing mainly because I liked the idea of documenting the things we see and being able to capture them forever.

Why do you like to take pictures?

I like to take pictures for many reasons. The main one being the idea that one can recall certain memories, for example a hot air balloon flight over York was one of the best things I have ever done, and document this day through pictures and being able to look back at the photos and remember the sights, people you met that day, etc., that’s a wonderful thing. And also being able to inspire younger people like me when I started is a bonus! I would always tell someone new to go !!

What equipment do you use?

I shoot on a Nikon D5500, with a 35mm lens, a standard 18-55mm kit lens, and a 55-200mm lens. I also have a drone.

What’s your favorite photo you’ve taken?

Difficult question. I have to say a picture of my hot air balloon flight over York. It was a September morning, the sun was rising and we flew over the city. The final image I received attracted a LOT of attention and I will never forget this photo.

Where is your favorite place to take photos?

York for its incredible history. I sometimes like to go to Leeds and capture the cityscape. I really like shooting at night, anywhere at night! I love the challenge of night photography because it’s much more complex to shoot all day long, you have to control it manually!

When and why did you join The Press Camera Club?

I would probably say I joined the photography club in January 2018. I heard about the group by word of mouth and when I joined I loved seeing footage from other York photographers and the surroundings and I liked the challenge of it!

If you could photograph anyone or any location, who / what would it be and why?

I always said New York was the number one list for me, just a magical city for photography, there is so much going on, cityscapes, street photography, portraits etc. Another should be somewhere like Berlin for the street aspect.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to get into photography?

Go for it. Don’t worry about not having fancy equipment, anyone can snap a photo and tell a story behind it! Once you get in there you can make a living from it and then you can afford the lenses and other equipment. It comes hand in hand!
