A whale is spotted underwater by tourists watching from a boat – hoping to swim with them.

The mother humpback was first spotted resting on the surface of the water with her baby nearby in the sea surrounding the Ha’apai Islands in Tonga.

According to photographer Erez Beatus, whales have a “genuine desire” to be with humans because they often get very close.

Every 20 minutes, the female returned to the surface to breathe before diving back 20 meters below.

As her baby – believed to be around five weeks old – came back every few minutes before deciding to launch herself out of the water.

The 48-year-old owner of the Israel-based tourism company Freediving Holidays said: “When we approach the whales, we look for any signs of discomfort, and if we feel the whales are not happy in our presence, we go back to the boat.

“We spend between a few minutes and over an hour with them, observing their interactions and aim to leave the whales the same way we encountered them – relaxed.

“There is nothing in this world that comes close to eye contact with a whale.

“Swimming with the whales they sometimes choose to get very close and in those moments, beyond their immense size, I feel the gentleness and their desire to communicate.

“My favorite thing about these photos is the fact that the whales sincerely want to interact with the swimmers and the people on the boat.

“There was a tangible sense of non-verbal communication and joy.

“At the end of the interaction, the whales continued to play in the same area, which means that they were not disturbed by our presence.”
