About Google Street View Camera

Along with Google Street View car and trekker, the company is piloting a new camera that will be fully rolled out next year to help it collect high-quality images in more places. “This new camera takes all the power, resolution and processing capabilities we’ve put into an entire Street View car, and whittles it down to an ultra-portable camera system that’s about the size of a house cat. But unlike house cats, he’s ready to be taken to remote islands, to the tops of mountains, or on a walk in your local town square,” the blog read. Here’s a quick look at Street View’s new camera system:

1. It weighs less than 15 pounds. This means it can be shipped anywhere.

2. It’s customizable. “Previously, we had to create an entirely new camera system every time we wanted to collect different types of images. But now we can add to this modular camera components such as lidar – laser scanners – to collect images with even more useful details, like floor markings or potholes. We can add these features when we need them and remove them when we don’t,” Google said.

3. It can fit any car. The new camera can be attached to any vehicle with a roof rack and controlled directly from a mobile device – no need for a specialist car or complex processing equipment. “You’ll start seeing our fun new Google-colored camera alongside our iconic Street View cars and hikers next year,” Google said.
